How to take care of dental implants?

Unlike natural teeth, dental implants do not turn yellow and are not affected by tooth decay.
However, they still require regular and thorough care.
Without it, complications may arise — and in the worst cases, this can lead to the need for implant replacement.
Inadequate care of prosthetics can lead to inflammation of the oral mucosa, a condition known as mucositis.
Symptoms of mucositis include pain during chewing and swallowing, as well as redness and swelling of the gums around the implant.

If left untreated, the inflammation can spread to surrounding soft tissues and develop into peri-implantitis.
In severe cases of peri-implantitis, bone resorption occurs and implant rejection may follow.
Immediately after dental prosthetic treatment, a number of recommendations should be followed for several weeks:

  1. Do not eat for the first 2 hours after implant placement.
  2. On the first day after the procedure, avoid brushing the area around the implant.
  3. Limit the intake of hot, cold, and hard foods.
  4. When chewing, use the side opposite the surgical site.
  5. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush for cleaning.
  6. Starting from the second day, rinse your mouth with a mild saltwater solution after meals.
  7. In the morning and evening, use antiseptic mouthwashes and brush your teeth regularly.
  8. Avoid overheating, hypothermia, air travel, and intense physical activity.
  9. If the implant is placed in the upper jaw, be cautious when sneezing or coughing.
  10. In case of swelling, a rise in body temperature above 38°C, or increasing pain — seek medical attention.

The first 1–2 months after implantation are the most critical for complications, so it is essential to strictly follow your doctor’s instructions during the postoperative period.
Caring for dental implants is a key factor in ensuring the long-term functionality and aesthetics of your smile.
Going forward, it’s important to follow these basic rules of implant care:

Maintain good hygiene: Effective cleaning of both teeth and implants reduces the risk of inflammation and infection. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and gentle dental floss. Electric toothbrushes can also make care easier.

Prevention: Visit your dentist regularly for professional cleanings and implant maintenance. Your doctor can detect potential problems early and prevent their progression.

Avoid overloading: Excessive pressure or overload on implants can lead to complications. Avoid habits that place stress on the implants, such as chewing hard objects.

Eat well: A balanced diet supports overall oral and implant health. Avoid excessive sugar intake and clean your teeth after eating.

Quit smoking: Smoking can negatively affect gum health and the condition of your implants.

Be cautious during sports: Use protective mouthguards when playing sports to prevent injury to your implants.

Follow your doctor’s advice: Always follow your dentist’s recommendations regarding implant care. They may offer personalized tips based on your specific case.

By following these guidelines and consulting regularly with your dental specialist, you can maintain the long-term aesthetics and function of your dental implants.
